Australia's Favourite Natural Paving Material

Sandstone has been the paving material of choice for Australian homes and gardens for well over a century. Walk through any established Sydney suburb and you will find sandstone paving on garden paths, sandstone steps leading up to front verandahs, and sandstone retaining walls separating garden levels. This is no accident - sandstone is perfectly suited to the Australian environment, the Australian light, and the Australian love of outdoor living.

The warm honey, gold, buff and amber tones of sandstone complement our distinctive sunlight in a way that imported stones and manufactured tiles cannot match. Sandstone does not look washed out or clinical in bright Australian light. Instead, it glows. Its naturally textured surface provides grip and prevents glare on hot summer days. And because sandstone is a sedimentary stone that formed in layers over millions of years, each piece carries unique patterning that adds character and visual interest to any outdoor space.

At Stone Oasis, we stock a comprehensive range of sandstone tiles and pavers sourced from quality quarries, available in a variety of finishes, sizes and thicknesses to suit every outdoor application.

Sandstone Tile Finishes: Choosing the Right Surface

The finish of your sandstone tiles and pavers makes a significant difference to both the appearance and the performance of the stone in your specific application. Stone Oasis stocks sandstone in four main finishes, each suited to different uses.

Sawn sandstone has a smooth, flat surface created by machine cutting. It is the most contemporary-looking finish and is well suited to modern outdoor entertaining areas and courtyards where a clean, regular surface is desired. Sawn sandstone is easier to clean than textured finishes and looks excellent in large-format tiles.

Honed sandstone takes the sawn surface a step further, with additional grinding that creates a slightly more refined face. It has a subtle matte sheen that looks beautiful in both contemporary and traditional settings. Honed sandstone is a versatile choice for entertaining areas, covered outdoor rooms and indoor-outdoor transition spaces.

Natural split face sandstone retains the stone's original cleaved surface from quarrying. Each tile has a unique, organic texture that provides excellent grip and a very natural, unprocessed appearance. Split face sandstone is ideal for garden paths, bushland settings and any application where you want the stone to look like it belongs in the landscape.

Bush-hammered sandstone has been mechanically textured with small hammers to create a pitted, textured surface with outstanding slip resistance. It is an excellent choice for pool surrounds, steps and any wet area where foot traction is a safety priority.

Sandstone Paving for Outdoor Entertaining Areas

The outdoor entertaining area is where sandstone paving really shines. A large sandstone-paved alfresco area creates an immediate sense of warmth and permanence that concrete, timber and ceramic tiles simply do not achieve. Sandstone's natural variation means no two slabs are identical, so a paved entertaining area in sandstone has the kind of character and depth that only natural materials can provide.

For outdoor entertaining areas, we recommend sandstone pavers in a sawn or honed finish in a large format - typically 600x400mm, 600x600mm or 800x400mm. Large-format pavers reduce the number of grout lines in the space, creating a more open, expansive look. Our team can advise on the best layout pattern - whether that is a traditional stack bond, a running bond, a herringbone or a French pattern - and help you estimate the quantity of stone required for your specific area.

Sandstone for Pool Surrounds

Sandstone pool surrounds are one of the most popular applications for this stone in Sydney, and for very good reason. Sandstone stays comfortably cool underfoot even in direct summer sun, making it a safe and pleasant surface around the pool where bare feet are the norm. Its natural texture provides grip when wet, reducing the risk of slips on the pool's edge.

For pool surrounds, bush-hammered or split face sandstone is the most practical finish choice. The texture provides the best slip resistance and hides wet footprints and minor staining more effectively than smooth finishes. In terms of colour, the warm honey and golden tones of sandstone complement pool water beautifully - the warm stone tones and the blue-green water create a colour combination that looks naturally harmonious.

Sandstone pool surrounds should always be sealed with a quality penetrating sealer before use. This prevents chlorine splash and sunscreen from penetrating the stone's surface and causing long-term staining. Stone Oasis stocks appropriate sealers for sandstone pool surrounds and our team can advise on the right product for your installation.

Sandstone Pavers for Driveways and Pathways

Sandstone pavers are a beautiful choice for front driveways, garden paths and side-access pathways. Their natural appearance creates a warm, inviting first impression that adds real kerb appeal to a property. For driveway applications, sandstone should be at least 30mm thick to handle vehicle loads without cracking, and should be laid on a correctly compacted and prepared base.

For garden paths and stepping stone arrangements, thinner sandstone tiles (20mm) are typically sufficient. Irregular natural split face sandstone pieces are particularly popular for informal garden paths, where their organic shapes and varied tones look like they belong in the garden setting. Stepping stone paths through garden beds can be created using natural sandstone pieces in random sizes and shapes, laid with minimal or no grouting for a completely natural look.
